 Hello Don,

I am the ITT Coordinator for Education Leeds and since beginning in post just over a year ago, I have found your excellent website a source of much help and encouragement.

I recently attended a meeting of travel trainers working in the region of West Yorkshire (and some further afield), also attended by Kevin Northrop with whom I believe you've spoken recently. At this meeting I mentioned how you had requested peoples thoughts on a Standardized help card, with associated symbol.

This concept was discussed and the general consensus was that a nationally recognised symbol/ colour scheme would be extremely useful. The group discussed how the it could be incorporated into a bus pass holder and what colour would be most appropriate. The outcome of this discussion was that the delegate representing our PTE would discuss with colleagues at Metro how the idea might be implemented and promoted within West Yorkshire. I shall keep you informed of developments here as soon as I know anymore.

Kind regards

Buddy Schemes

I would like to know if anyone has a successful travel buddy scheme, rather than travel training this
would be a longer term type of travel support or even a permanent type of support. Has anyone got a scheme running?
If so, could you let me know on 0114 2039318 or emma.cawley@sheffield.gov.uk

Thanks

Emma

Just emailing as have been reading about the contact cards on the website.
This is a fantastic idea, There is a real void in this area that really
needs to be filled. As it stands at the moment we have been making our own
cards to give to students when they reach independence but a nationally
recognized card / symbol is really what is needed, we would most definitely
use them!

Just e-mailing as per reading on the site, The card idea is a good one, I have been looking for a  national one today as there are alert cards for adults with Aspergers that I have become aware of and have been looking into supported by the local constabulary which are more around individuals being questioned by Police following behavioural reports but a scheme such as the one you mention would be good especially as vulnerability is still a big concern for individuals undergoing training.
Still a great site I have received some good links from contacts who have got in touch with me from here which has been useful to continually develop the work I'm undergoing.

Cheers

Yes, very good idea. I mentioned this at the GMPTE conference in January.

Regarding the campaign for the nationally recognised card – I think it is a fantastic idea, and you can be sure that we would use them here in Derby. Please keep us informed.
Many thanks

Hello CoolMove

Yes - the standard format for the travel card which could be shown to transport drivers around the country sounds a great idea.  For the people with learning disabilities that we work with, it would need to feature photo images or symbols, rather than words.  Maybe it could be double credit card size, so it could fold in half and be easily stored in a wallet/handbag.

Sounds great - I hope that there's lots of support for it - your template idea could go on the CoolMove website for others to replicate?

I'm with Amie (see her appeal on the message board) looking for job descriptions for dedicated travel trainers and travel buddies.  If anyone is willing to e-mail either job descriptions it would be great.

Happy travelling everyone!

Hi

In Barnsley we are working with SYPTE to develop a travel training pack and scheme for adults with a Learning Disability. We will be looking to recruit Travel Trainers and Travel buddies in the future and I am trying to get hold of copies of any job descriptions that may already exist for Travel Trainers or Travel buddies.

Initially we would be looking to recruit volunteers to be buddies but would in the future like to look at paying our experienced buddies for the work they do.

Can anyone help?
