Travel Training - Good Practice Guidance is a bang-up-to-date survey of six travel training projects in the UK with a distillation of the good practice they use. Get a download from http://afse.org.uk/news/travel_training.pdf or it may be easier to ring GMPTE (That's Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive) on 0161 242 6000.

GMPTE's website deals with a lot of issues around disability and access. http://www.gmpte.com

Centro, the PTE for the West Midlands, will soon be issuing literature and information to encourage travel training. Their site is at http://www.centro.org.uk

The Bradford Travel Training Unit, based at Bradford College have 4 years experience doing that thing and would make an excellent blueprint for any FE colleges thinking of developing a travel training initiative. For those of you interested in training travel trainers, I've found some work by Western Michigan University on travel training for people with disabilities in the US. They distinguish between travel trainers and travel instructors. If there's nothing currently available over here, this paper may be a good starting point.www.wmich.edu/hhs/blrh/travel/intro.htm

Contact David McManus who is also one of their train drivers - 07917 694048 or david.r.mcmanus@btinternet.com . Dave comes highly recommended particularly for teenagers who use the railways. His series of real life experiences teach respect for rail safety.
