Accredited Travel Training Course at Bradford  Travel Training Unit

 

The Bradford Travel Training Unit offers the following structured training course (fully accredited by OCN): -
 

‘Introduction to Travel Training’

 
This level 2 training course is designed to give participating candidates the appropriate skills, in order that they will be able to offer people with a learning disability an individual, structured, travel-training programme.  ‘Independent travel helps reduce the impact of exclusion and helps support integration into the labour market and society in general’.
The course consists of two consecutive days in the classroom, with an opportunity to practise skills in the field.  The programme will consist of a variety of theoretical and practical activities, to include:- an overview, case studies, initial assessment of trainee, risk assessment of specified route, task analysis, teaching road safety, teaching use of bus/train, peer training sessions, judging competence, emergency procedures, monitoring and evaluation procedures.
The course will offer candidates a working manual (+ a CD), to include descriptions of travel-training, assessment forms, recording forms, a referral questionnaire, road safety programme, bus/train training programme, final report, emergency procedures and an example of an emergency travel training card.
 
Aims
1.      To furnish candidates with the appropriate skills to teach/train individuals with a learning disability (i.e. the importance of good communication, practical demonstrations and constant repetition).
 
2.      To furnish candidates with the knowledge to undertake an assessment programme of individuals with a learning disability, to include: -
i)                    pre-requisite skills, assessing suitability for training
ii)                   initial assessment, assessing suitability for training
iii)                 risk assessment (safest route, suggestions of how to overcome dangers)
 
3.      To furnish candidates with the knowledge to offer a tailor made, 1-1 training programme, to meet the needs of the individual with a learning disability. This will include: -
i)                    a step-by-step plan
ii)                   a structured road safety programme
iii)                 a structured bus travel training programme
iv)                 a structured train travel training programme (if required)
 
4.      To furnish candidates with the appropriate forms so that they can record/monitor: -
i)                    ongoing assessments
ii)                   road safety programmes
iii)                 bus travel programmes
iv)                 train travel programmes
v)                  final reports
 
5.      To furnish candidates with ideas of how to judge competence in the individual.
 
The course is aimed at:- Support Workers, Classroom Assistants, LEA staff, Day Centre Officers, Residential staff.  Also, volunteers working in an allied field with a genuine desire to support/train individuals with a learning disability.
 
As a result of completing the course candidates will be able to consider offering a specialist travel-training programme to people with a learning disability.
 
(Rotherham LEA, Worcestershire County Council, Lincolnshire C. C., Sheffield City Council and the North East Valuing People Support Team have previously successfully undertaken this course).

1.1   Give key reasons why pre-requisite and initial

1.2   Give an example of why a trainee might be
       inappropriate for travel training.
1.3   Comment on a step-by-step bus or train plan for
       a trainee.
1.4   Describe the process/method the trainer uses to
       assess the trainee’s learning and achievement.
 
2.      Understand the Health & Safety implications of travel training people with a learning disability.

2.1   Give reasons for the assessment of risk of the  
       proposed training route before it is used with a
       trainee.
2.2   Comment on the importance of a safe route (not
       necessarily the quickest).
2.3    Describe the main personal safety issues and emergency procedures.
